Jacobs’ Stunning Comeback in Fox Valley Conference

Junior running back Aiden Brunner had patience as he awaited his moment to shine for the Jacobs Golden Eagles. Under the guidance of coach Brian Zimmerman, the program emphasizes a strong ground game, making it difficult to immediately secure a starting position.

Brunner recalled, “I knew coming in I wasn’t going to play right away. I knew I was going to have to wait and develop. I talked with ‘Zim’ about it. Now, it’s my chance.”

On Friday night, Brunner seized that opportunity during one of the area’s most dramatic comebacks. He scored two crucial touchdowns in the second half, including the game-winning score with only 1.8 seconds remaining. Jacobs overturned a 17-point deficit to secure a 31-27 victory over Burlington Central in the Fox Valley Conference.

Brunner closed the game with 38 yards on 11 carries, achieving touchdowns from 1 and 8 yards out. Quarterback Austin Stennett fueled the comeback by completing 19 of 31 passes for 263 yards, connecting with Owen Crouch for a 74-yard touchdown. Crouch had five catches totaling 111 yards.

Chris Williams contributed with seven catches for 59 yards and scored an 8-yard touchdown on a reverse play. Jordan Hudson added five receptions for 75 yards. For Burlington Central, Reece Beemer completed 14 of 30 passes for 112 yards, adding a touchdown pass. His 10-yard touchdown run with 1:06 left gave the Rockets a lead, momentarily setting the score at 27-24.

Parker Auxier carried 24 times, racking up 126 yards and two touchdowns for the Rockets. Although Jacobs hasn’t been as strong in the running game this season, Stennett’s development at quarterback has been a key factor, stepping in to fill that gap.

Coach Zimmerman expressed pride in Brunner’s breakout performance in the second half, noting, “He’s a guy that’s been waiting in the wings. We told him it was his turn to take the reins. We have a rich tradition of running the ball.”

We haven’t been satisfied with what we’re doing running the ball, but Austin has made some really big plays.

After Burlington Central took a 27-24 lead with a 13-play, 68-yard drive, Jacobs once again found their fighting spirit. Stennett led the Golden Eagles downfield, and Brunner powered in for the winning touchdown.

Reflecting on the decisive play, Brunner said, “That play call, we knew we had the power on them, so we were just going to run it down their throat. The line washed their way down and I saw the gap. It was great.”

Jacobs experienced a turning point after Beemer’s 7-yard touchdown pass to Chace Chesney gave the Rockets a 20-3 lead. Stennett’s long touchdown pass to Crouch sparked the comeback. After four defensive stops, Jacobs marched 71 yards in five plays, finishing with Brunner’s 8-yard touchdown run to narrow the deficit to 20-17.

Williams’ 8-yard touchdown then shifted the lead to Jacobs at 24-20 with just over five minutes remaining. Despite the Rockets reclaiming the lead, Burlington Central coach Brian Iossi lamented missed red zone opportunities.

Iossi stated, “Quite honestly, we lost that game in the second quarter when we didn’t score three times inside the 20-yard line. You have to finish those, but I’m proud of them.”

Leading up to the game, Jacobs’ coaches imparted a lasting message. “This is a game you’re going to remember for the rest of your lives,” Brunner recounted. As the night unfolded, those words proved true.

Brunner concluded, “I’ve never been a part of something like that.”
