Rare Medicane Forming in the Mediterranean

6 days ago 0

A rare meteorological phenomenon known as a ‘medicane’ is forming in the Mediterranean, located northeast of Tripoli, Libya. This system is anticipated to intensify, potentially reaching high-end tropical storm strength by Wednesday.

Such systems in the Mediterranean are difficult to predict in terms of their trajectory and impact. However, current forecasts suggest they could affect Greece, northern Libya, or northwest Egypt. These medicanes are similar to hurricanes, characterized by strong winds and heavy rainfall.

Historical occurrences of such weather systems include the destructive hurricane Ianos in Karditsa, Greece, in September 2020. The damage was significant, with various shops and infrastructure affected due to severe flooding.

Systems like these underscore the unpredictable nature of Mediterranean weather and highlight the importance of preparedness in vulnerable regions.
