Puka Nacua’s path to becoming one of the NFL’s top receivers has encountered serious obstacles as allegations of misconduct surface. The Los Angeles Rams wide receiver faces new claims of abuse by his ex-girlfriend, Hallie Aiono, who shared her experience on TikTok before removing the video. She accuses Nacua of abuse and neglect during their four-year relationship.
Aiono expressed the impact of the situation, mentioning, “I went from loving somebody so deeply for four years, I felt it in my bones, to experiencing extreme betrayal, abuse, complete neglect from them, in what felt like it happened almost overnight.” She emphasized that the private struggles weighed heavier on her than any public disputes.
“A lot of the things that were public affected my mental health,” Aiono explained. “But honestly, the things that were happening in private are what completely crushed me and altered my brain chemistry. Those parts, what people never saw or knew of, are what broke me.”
These allegations come after a successful season for Nacua, who led the NFL with 129 catches and accumulated 1,715 receiving yards.
In March, new complications arose. Nacua was named in a civil lawsuit filed by Madison Atiabi, citing incidents at a chaotic New Year’s Eve party. The accusations include biting and using an anti-Semitic slur. Nacua’s lawyer, Levi McCathern, dismissed these claims as extortion, emphasizing that demands for millions of dollars were made in exchange for silence. He refuted the charges, describing them as “horseplay.”
“Puka denies these allegations in the strongest possible terms,” McCathern said. “Our office was contacted with demands of millions of dollars in exchange for not publicizing these allegations. This is not a legitimate claim. It is blackmail.”
Amid these troubles, Nacua entered a rehabilitation facility to address personal growth, according to his attorney. This situation complicates his contract talks. Although Nacua has joined WIN Sports Group to negotiate a new deal, the Rams seem cautious. They plan to wait for clarity in his legal matters and personal improvement before deciding on a lucrative contract extension.
The NFL is also examining Nacua’s actions under its Personal Conduct Policy, which can lead to player discipline even without criminal charges. With his remarkable on-field performance, Nacua holds leverage in negotiations, but unresolved issues and the risk of suspension present significant hurdles in securing a promised $150 million contract extension.
