Protests Disrupt Ireland vs. Qatar Soccer Match Over Israel Ties

4 weeks ago 0

The international soccer friendly between Ireland and Qatar was interrupted twice due to protests against the Nations League matches involving Israel. Tennis balls with protest messages were tossed onto the field at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium by fans from various sections, as reported by The 42.

A statement from League of Ireland supporters claimed responsibility for the protests. They aimed to convey a strong message to the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) and the government, demanding the cancellation of fixtures against Israel. The protest included fans from major clubs in Dublin, Cork City, Drogheda United, Dundalk FC, Galway United, Sligo Rovers, and Waterford. Tennis balls carried the message #StopTheGame, and a banner with the same demand was displayed.

Video captured by journalist David Sneyd showed the protest scene. Chants of ‘Free Palestine’ were also heard. One protester highlighted their objections to playing against Israel, labeling it an apartheid regime and citing allegations of genocide against Palestinians. They emphasized that many players have served in the Israeli Defense Forces, accusing them of violence against athletes in Gaza.

The protest opposed Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrímsson’s plea for fans to support the team rather than protest. A motion by the Professional Footballers’ Association Ireland (PFAI) and other clubs also called for a boycott of the games on legal and moral grounds, according to The 42. Scheduled matches against Israel would take place on neutral ground on Sept. 27 and in Dublin on Oct. 4.

Tensions with Israel in soccer aren’t new. Earlier in May, the Palestinian Football Association President Jibril Rajoub wouldn’t engage with Israel Football Association’s Vice President Basim Sheikh Suliman at a FIFA Congress. Rajoub called for sanctions against Israel in international soccer, refusing to be seen with someone representing Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Despite the disruptions, Ireland won the match against Qatar 1-0, even after receiving a red card. For ongoing sports news, follow Fox News Digital.
