Princess Bha, Potential Heir to Thai Throne, Passes Away at 47

2 weeks ago 0

Princess Bha of Thailand, who was viewed as a potential successor to the throne, passed away in a Bangkok hospital at the age of 47. Her death was announced by the royal palace. The princess had been in a coma for three and a half years following a collapse in December 2022.

Bajrakitiyabha Narendira Debyavati, known as Princess Bha, fell unconscious while running with her dogs in a northern Thailand park. She was placed on life support, and in May, the palace revealed she suffered from an abdominal infection, which led to low blood pressure and an irregular heartbeat.

Her passing intensifies the complexities around Thailand’s royal succession. King Maha Vajiralongkorn, aged 73, has not declared an heir. Given Princess Bha’s royal lineage, analysts considered her as a potential candidate to be Thailand’s first ruling queen. She was the only child of the king and his first wife, Princess Soamsawali, a cousin to the king.

King Maha Vajiralongkorn’s life has been marred by scandals. He has married four times and fathered seven children. Notably, he disowned four sons from his relationship with his second wife, actress Sujarinee Vivacharawongse, starting in 1979 before their eventual marriage.

The Thai monarchy does not follow an automatic succession. The king can choose his heir, or if absent, the country’s privy council may nominate a princess to the throne according to the Thai constitution.
