President Trump Faces Criticism for White House Photos with Global Leaders

3 hours ago 0

President Donald Trump is under scrutiny for displaying photos of himself with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping in the White House. These images, revealed by journalist Jacqueline Alemany, have sparked significant backlash on social media. The photos are situated next to the Palm Room’s doors, prompting a Republican strategist to label them as ‘an insult to Democratic values.’ An anti-Trump political group questioned the presence of ‘communist authoritarians in gilded frames in the White House.’

Previously, a similar controversy arose in January when PBS News showcased an image of Trump with Putin. The White House responded, stating there’s ‘nothing unusual’ about displaying photos from Trump’s meetings with world leaders. Newsweek reached out to the White House for further comment.

What Do the Photos Show?

According to Alemany, the photos are displayed by Palm Room doors, linking the West Wing with the residence. The photo with Putin seems to be from their summit on August 15, 2025, at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska. This image is thought to be a gift from Putin, though the White House hasn’t confirmed this.

What Critics Have Said

Critics have highlighted the human rights issues Russia and China are accused of, alongside their ideological differences with America. Brittany Martinez, a Republican strategist, posted: ‘Republican or Democrat, no U.S. president should display framed photos of dictators in the White House.’ Yvanna D. Cancela, former adviser to President Joe Biden, shared the images with the caption: ‘This is pretty insane.’ Media commentator Brian Krassenstein, known for criticizing Trump, commented: ‘Just a photo of Trump standing next to Putin on display in the White House. Nothing to see here.’

The Lincoln Project, co-founded by conservative lawyer George Conway, criticized the photos: ‘If ‘communism is the greatest threat to our country in its history’ and he wants to root it out of America, then why is he hanging pictures of communist authoritarians in the White House?’

Trump’s Relationship With Putin and Xi

Despite ongoing tensions—such as the Russia-Ukraine war and trade issues with China—Trump has engaged diplomatically with Putin and Xi. A Russian newspaper reported Putin is unlikely to accept Trump’s invitation to the G20 conference in Miami, despite Moscow’s welcoming of the invitation. Critics view this as normalizing Russian aggression following nearly five years of conflict.

During an Alaska summit in August last year, Trump showcased a military flyover in a bid to secure a deal between Russia and Ukraine. Trump labeled Biden’s involvement in the war as a ‘stupid war.’ Trump also visited China in May and hosted Xi Jinping in Washington in September, marking Xi’s first state visit since 2015. Trump is seeking Xi’s assistance in resolving conflicts involving Chinese allies Russia and Iran, while pursuing fresh trade deals.

At a State Dinner during Xi’s visit last month, Trump gifted him a bald eagle statue, symbolizing America’s national mascot. Trump remarked on their differing systems but emphasized the enduring ties between their people. He stated they could continue building a future relationship that supports ‘prosperity and security for future generations.’
