Adopted Man Discovers Music Icon as Biological Father

Michael Goessling has always known he was adopted, but it wasn’t until nearly 58 years later that he discovered his biological father was renowned musician Michael McDonald. McDonald, known for his work with the Doobie Brothers and as a solo artist, had unknowingly been admired by Goessling throughout his life.

The revelation came after a long journey beginning with a letter Goessling received on May 6, 2025. An attorney for his biological mother contacted him with the news that she believed he was the son she had given up for adoption nearly 58 years ago through Catholic Charities. This reopened a mystery Goessling had carried since birth.

“It was a wonderful surprise, but quite a shock,” Goessling said.

After speaking to his biological mother, Goessling learned that both of his birth parents had always hoped he was well and were open to communication. This encounter led to meeting his biological father, who had chosen to stay in the background until the mother-son reunion took place. The two finally connected, leading to a phone call where McDonald revealed his identity along with a notable tour stop coming up in St. Louis.

Goessling realized he had seen his father perform on stage twice in his youth, not knowing who he was. Despite Goessling’s surprise, those around him had long remarked on his resemblance to McDonald, especially after he grew a beard during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Goessling’s story is not solely about a celebrity connection. He also came to understand the courageous decisions his biological parents faced as teenagers, opting for adoption rather than raising a child themselves at such a young age. This decision eventually led Goessling to his adoptive parents, Paul and Kay Goessling, with whom he shares a deep bond.

Paul Goessling passed away shortly before Christmas in 2024, making the timing of Goessling’s newfound connection to his biological father even more poignant. His adoptive mother, Kay, fully embraced this new chapter of their family’s story.

“Everybody’s in love with everybody,” Goessling said, describing the ease with which his family branches have merged.

Frequent communication with McDonald and his newfound family members has enriched Goessling’s life. He sees his story as an opportunity to emphasize the positive aspects of adoption, describing it as a profound blessing in his life. This understanding was nurtured by his adoptive parents from a young age.
