Powerball Lottery Launches in the UK: What to Expect

Powerball lottery tickets are now available for purchase in the United Kingdom, starting Tuesday. This enables players in the UK to participate in the same massive jackpot draws as players in the U.S. The odds of winning these jackpots remain incredibly low at 1 in 292.2 million.

This international expansion, announced in April, results from a partnership between the Multi-State Lottery Association in the U.S. and Allwyn UK. It marks the first time a lottery outside the United States contributes to the Powerball jackpot. UK players can now aim for jackpots much larger than those offered by local and European lotteries.

The first UK-inclusive Powerball drawing will take place on a Wednesday night. Historically, the largest Powerball prize was over $2 billion, won in California in 2022. Comparatively, EuroMillions, a lottery available in nine European nations, awarded the maximum prize of 250 million euros to players from France, Ireland, and Austria throughout 2025.

According to U.S. lottery officials, the increased number of players through this expansion will boost Powerball jackpots, thus potentially raising sales as more participants are attracted to larger top prizes. A Powerball ticket price is $2, with UK tickets solely contributing to the jackpot prize and featuring a different lower-tier prize system.

Differences in estimated jackpot amounts will arise between the U.S. and UK due to currency conversion and the U.S. advertising pre-tax prizes, unlike in the UK. UK jackpots are payable over 30 years, while U.S. winners often choose a cash payout, although an annuity option is available.

Powerball is played in 45 U.S. states, plus Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Players pick five numbers from 1 to 69 and a red Powerball number from 1 to 26. Drawings continue on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays.
