Potential NCAA Investigation into University of Cincinnati over Football Player’s Gambling Issues

Brendan Sorsby, while not participating in college or professional football in 2026, has brought potential trouble to his former college program. During an interview with ‘105.3 The Fan’ in Dallas last month, his agent, Ron Slavin, accused the University of Cincinnati of being aware of Sorsby’s gambling addiction and ignoring it.

“Nobody knew when he was in the portal that this was happening,” Slavin stated. “… If anybody should be questioned or catching heat, it should be Cincinnati because they knew for two years and never said anything or didn’t do anything about it. That’s the part of the story that gets lost.”

Slavin’s comments have led the NCAA to investigate the University of Cincinnati, as reported by Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports. Dellenger noted that the NCAA has sent a letter of inquiry to the university concerning Sorsby’s time there. Such a letter signifies the beginning of an investigation into possible violations, though it does not always indicate wrongdoing and often involves collaboration with the university.

The NCAA’s current actions seem exploratory, but should evidence surface confirming the school’s knowledge of Sorsby’s gambling issues, penalties could include fines, forfeited wins, and loss of scholarships.

In response to Slavin’s allegations, Cincinnati quickly denied awareness of Sorsby’s gambling activities. The university emphasized its commitment to educating student-athletes about gambling multiple times each year and stated it would have reported any violations to the NCAA.

“We will reiterate what we have said before: all of our student-athletes receive extensive gambling education multiple times throughout the year, and we would never knowingly play an athlete who violated NCAA sports wagering regulations,” the school declared. “If we ever became aware of impermissible wagering, we would report to the NCAA and comply with sanctions.”
