Leonardo Rodriguez from Pico Rivera received a prison sentence of five years and four months on Thursday for his involvement as the driver in a tragic 2024 accident. The incident occurred on U.S. 101 in Newbury Park and resulted in the deaths of two individuals.
Rodriguez, aged 21, was driving a black Honda Accord at speeds reaching 124 miles per hour near Thousand Oaks on October 31, 2024. The Ventura County District Attorney’s office reported the incident happened as Rodriguez attempted to overtake a vehicle in the slow lane by using the shoulder. During this maneuver, he collided with a tractor-trailer parked on the shoulder. The crash resulted in the deaths of his girlfriend, Serenity Rizkalla, and a friend, Michael Estrella, who were both ejected from the car and pronounced dead on the scene. Rodriguez and another passenger sustained minor injuries.
“This tragedy was preventable, and the victims’ families will forever live with the consequences,” stated Deputy District Attorney George Brietigam. “We hope today’s sentence provides their loved ones with some measure of closure.”
In June, Rodriguez pleaded guilty to two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter. The case highlights the grave consequences of reckless driving and its impact on the lives of victims’ families.
