Physicians Advocate Against FDA Nominee Heidi Overton

4 minutes ago 0

Thousands of physicians are calling on the Senate to reject Heidi Overton, nominated by former President Trump to lead the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Over 2,500 medical professionals from all 50 states, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico, coordinated by the Committee to Protect Health Care, signed a letter voicing concerns about Overton’s positions. According to these physicians, Overton’s stance on vaccines and her extremist anti-abortion advocacy compromise her ability to lead the vital public health institution.

They emphasized the need for an FDA commissioner who prioritizes evidence and patient safety, criticizing Overton’s perceived alignment with Trump’s controversial vaccine directives and her anti-abortion stance. Physician advocates from the group recently met with members of the Senate HELP Committee, aiming to discuss these concerns. The committee’s decision hinges on just one Republican vote before the nomination can proceed to the Senate floor. The vote is scheduled for after the midterm elections.

Overton’s confirmation hearing last week revealed little about her intentions for the FDA’s vast responsibilities, including drug, tobacco, vaccine regulation, and food safety. Committee Chair Bill Cassidy, a physician and Republican Senator from Louisiana, pressed for clarity on Overton’s involvement with a presidential directive concerning splitting the MMR vaccine into separate doses. Cassidy seeks commitments from nominees to maintain scientific integrity and sound vaccine policies.

In related news, Pennsylvania health officials recently reported a fifth measles-associated death during the worst outbreak in over 35 years. Meanwhile, three attorneys general in anti-abortion states have challenged abortion shield laws in states like New York, Massachusetts, and California. Additionally, the White House announced $500 refund checks to nearly one million Americans overcharged for their ObamaCare insurance.

This development follows claims of unspent healthcare funding nearing expiry, testing Congress’s resolve against Trump’s administration. State health developments include mental health first aid training in North Carolina colleges and climate change initiatives in New Mexico. Furthermore, Alabama residents might receive health insurance refund checks.
