Video released by the Philadelphia Police Department shows two suspects who discarded their sweatshirts and masks in the vicinity of 22nd and Porter streets. Both individuals are implicated in Schmidt’s killing and the armed robbery.
The shooter is described as a Black male between 5’3″ and 5’5″, dressed in dark clothing, and wearing a light gray camouflage-colored facemask. This suspect was reportedly armed with a handgun.
The second suspect is identified as having braids, standing 5’8″ tall. This person was wearing a light gray custom-designed “KONFUSED” brand hoodie, which features three skulls and crossbones with a bejeweled halo above each skull.
Investigation and Reactions
Investigators report that Schmidt chased the suspects after his phone was taken, demanding its return. Surveillance footage appears to show Schmidt saying, “Give me my phone,” followed by a phone being thrown on the ground. Moments later, a gunshot can be heard.
Billy Schmidt was a senior at Penn State World Campus, studying journalism and anticipated to graduate in December. His father, Bill Schmidt, revealed finding his son’s phone at the crime scene and expressed concern over possible DNA and fingerprints found on the device.
His sister, Anna Schmidt, expressed anguish and hope for justice, stating that the suspects deserve life imprisonment for the harm inflicted on her brother. She described the act as senseless, given that Schmidt was unarmed and the confrontation was over a phone.

The Philadelphia Police Department urges anyone with information about the suspects to contact them at 215-686-3334/3335. A $20,000 reward is offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
