Pat Oliphant: A Legacy in Editorial Cartooning

Renowned for his sharp wit and piercing illustrations, Pat Oliphant emerged as a significant figure in editorial cartooning. Over decades, he addressed pressing political narratives, targeting presidents from Lyndon B. Johnson to Donald Trump. His pieces reached an extensive audience, thanks to syndication in numerous publications.

In 1967, Oliphant prepared a collection for the Pulitzer Prize in editorial cartooning. It comprised 12 cartoons he crafted for the Denver Post. He included 11 pieces he was pleased with, reflecting his best work. However, he added one cartoon he considered subpar, strategically chosen to resonate with the jury’s political viewpoints.

His career was celebrated in various exhibitions, including a notable one in 1998 at the Susan Conway Gallery in Washington. This event showcased the depth and breadth of his contributions to the field of political satire.

“Editorial cartooning allowed Oliphant to challenge those in power, using humor and insight,” said a peer, emphasizing the impact of his work over the years.
