Construction activities are in full swing on the National Mall. This effort is in preparation for the Great American State Fair, a centerpiece of the United States’ 250th birthday celebrations. This initiative, overseen by an organization called Freedom 250, was assembled by President Trump. The unilaterally chosen group sidesteps the original congressional commission.
Initially, a decade ahead of the landmark anniversary, Congress set up a bipartisan commission named America 250. This commission was tasked with organizing infrastructure projects, producing educational content, and guiding all celebratory activities fitting the occasion. However, as the Fourth of July approaches, Freedom 250 has taken the reins for the anniversary’s most significant events.
Under Freedom 250, a series of grand plans are underway. These include the construction of a triumphal arch, the establishment of a National Garden of American Heroes, and the hosting of the Great American State Fair on the National Mall. Even grander events include a recent Ultimate Fighting Championship cage match held on the White House lawn.
This situation arose from two competing groups trying to manage the anniversary celebrations. America 250, the congressional initiative, is now overshadowed by Freedom 250, which reflects deeper governmental dysfunction and heightened partisanship.
Behind this contentious shift is a power struggle where President Trump has displaced congressional plans to promote his own vision for the celebrations. Congressional Democrats criticize Freedom 250 as a dominating gesture rather than a truly national celebration.
Representative Bonnie Watson Coleman, a New Jersey Democrat involved with America 250 since 2019, voiced the concerns of many. She described Freedom 250 as a personal project of President Trump, driven more by ego than national interest.
