NYC Mayor Faces Scrutiny Over 9/11 Remarks and Controversial Associations

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is under renewed scrutiny due to a resurfaced 2023 post about the 9/11 attacks. The post sparked debate when Mamdani mentioned wars following the attacks and their consequences. Nearly 3,000 New Yorkers died on 9/11; 22 years later, the death hasn’t stopped. We mourn our neighbors who died that day. The hundreds of thousands who died in the wars that followed. The unknown millions injured & displaced. Mamdani’s comments have led to outrage among some 9/11 family members, urging the socialist mayor not to attend the commemoration event in New York City. This comes after Mamdani interviewed Hasan Piker, who controversially stated, America deserved 9/11. Initially, Mamdani did not condemn Piker’s remarks but later described them as objectionable and reprehensible. Critics are accusing Mamdani of shifting focus from the attacks to the subsequent wars while using passive language for the deaths.

Marc Thiessen, a former Pentagon official during the attacks, expressed his disapproval stating, As someone who was in the Pentagon when the planes hit, this is absolutely disgraceful. You have no business ever setting foot at Ground Zero, much less on 9/11. New York City Councilwoman Inna Vernikov added, I guess they all just ‘died’ in an accident? And then you wonder why the families of 9/11 victims don’t want you at the ceremony. Stay home, Mamdani. Similarly, Florida Rep. Randy Fine criticized Mamdani, associating him with Muslim terrorists.

Retired Port Authority officers have advised Mamdani and New York Governor Kathy Hochul to stay away from Ground Zero on 9/11 as well. Voices like Fox News contributor Paul Mauro have urged Mamdani not to attend, promoting a sarcastic comment on Mamdani’s alleged moral equivalency.

Former first lady Jill Biden’s spokesperson Michael La Rosa expressed disbelief at the situation, and Rep. Nancy Mace strongly criticized the mayor by emphasizing the nature of the attacks, stating, Americans were MURDERED by TERRORISTS in the most horrific way. Similarly, Big Weekend Show co-host Joey Jones labeled Mamdani as cowardly.

Despite opposition, Mamdani intends to attend this year’s 9/11 commemoration to honor victims and survivors, alongside political figures such as Vice President JD Vance and former presidents including Biden and Bush. A petition organized by 9/11 victims’ families opposes Mamdani’s participation. The petition requests event organizers to reassess Mamdani’s involvement, questioning its suitability.

The petition states, We respectfully ask that the organizers carefully consider whether Mr. Mamdani’s participation would align with the intention of the ceremony and the expectations of the families most directly affected by the tragedy.
