Every year, as the NFL offseason reaches its quietest phase from mid-June to mid-July, ESPN conducts a survey. This poll involves coaches, general managers, and other executives ranking the top 10 players by position. These rankings provide material for discussions and offer fans a glimpse into how the league views top players. However, with any ranking, debates and disagreements are inevitable.

Key Players Excluded from the Rankings

Jared Verse, DE, Cleveland Browns

Jared Verse has been overlooked, despite his impressive stats with the Browns. Although many talented edge-rushers exist, Verse’s absence is noticeable. Over two seasons, he recorded 189 pressures, 130 hurries, 42 QB hits, 12.5 sacks, five forced fumbles, and two fumbles recovered. Last season, his 100 pressures were second only to Houston’s Will Anderson’s 102.

Jayden Daniels, QB, Washington Commanders

Choosing the top 10 quarterbacks is challenging, given the league’s talent. Despite this, Jayden Daniels deserved inclusion owing to his rookie success. He led the Commanders to a 12-5 record and an NFC Championship Game appearance. Though injuries marred last season, his capabilities when fit are unquestionable.

Brock Purdy, QB, San Francisco 49ers

Brock Purdy’s exclusion is surprising. With a 30-15 starter record, a 104 passer rating, and a 67.9% completion rate, his track record is solid. He made a Pro Bowl and led in passer rating during his first full season. His leadership helped the 49ers reach consecutive NFC Championship Games and a Super Bowl.

Malik Nabers, WR, New York Giants

Malik Nabers was another surprising omission. While injury sidelined him, few receivers rank above Nabers when fit. Though the top selections like Ja’Marr Chase and Justin Jefferson are valid, questions remain about others. Names like CeeDee Lamb and Jaxson Smith-Njigba would be replaced by Nabers easily.

Trey Hendrickson, DE, Baltimore Ravens

Injury seemed the main reason for Trey Hendrickson’s absence from the list. With only seven games played last season, his usual pass-rush impact was diminished. Despite this, his back-to-back 17.5-sack seasons in 2023 and 2024, and consistent double-digit sacks, highlight his caliber. With the Ravens next season, he may return to his dominant form.

Bobby Wagner, LB, Free Agent

Some might question Bobby Wagner’s exclusion since he’s currently a free agent. Nevertheless, his stats speak for themselves. He ranked fifth in tackles last season, amassing 162, with 4.5 sacks and two interceptions. His accolades include 11 All-Pro selections, 10 Pro Bowls, and leading tackle stats for three seasons. Wagner, despite his current status, remains among the league’s best.
