Nirmal “Nimsdai” Purja, a renowned mountaineer known for his extraordinary accomplishments in the Himalayas, passed away following an avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan. His expedition company, Elite Exped, announced his death, which also claimed nine other climbers. Purja, aged 43, was celebrated as one of the greatest high-altitude climbers due to his record-breaking ascents that gained him worldwide fame.

Who Was Nirmal Purja?

Born on July 25, 1983, in the Myagdi district of Nepal, Purja’s early life in the Himalayas set the stage for his future endeavors. At 18, he joined the British army’s elite Brigade of Gurkhas and later became the first Gurkha to achieve a position in the Special Boat Service (SBS), the UK’s special forces unit. His military service spanned over a decade.

Purja transitioned from military service to mountaineering, quickly rising to prominence in the field. In 2018, he received the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for his contributions to mountaineering. Alongside Mingma David Sherpa and Tejan Gurung, he co-founded Elite Exped, focusing on safe and Nepalese-led high-altitude expeditions.

In 2019, Purja gained global fame by completing “Project Possible,” climbing all 14 mountains over 8,000 meters in a single season. He accomplished this feat in just 189 days, significantly faster than the previous record. This achievement earned him multiple Guinness World Records.

The Netflix documentary “14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible,” released in 2021, brought his journey to a global audience. The film highlighted the challenges he faced and showcased his determination and discipline to overcome perceived limits.

That same year, Purja led the first all-Nepalese team to summit K2 in winter, a task regarded as one of mountaineering’s toughest challenges. The team celebrated by singing Nepal’s national anthem at the summit.

In May 2024, Purja faced accusations of sexual harassment and assault, reported by the New York Times. He denied these allegations through a statement by his lawyer and on Instagram, describing them as false.

In 2025, the podcast “Summit Justice” discussed these allegations as Purja continued to deny them. The Nepal Press Council also blacklisted The Himalayan Times for articles against Purja, ruling them as biased.
