In recent days, New Zealand defender Tim Payne has seen a significant surge in his social media presence. This change came after Argentine influencer Valen Scarsini, known as “elscarso” on Instagram and TikTok, highlighted Payne as the least known player at the World Cup.
Scarsini created a video urging his followers to engage with Payne’s account by liking, commenting, and following. This resulted in Payne’s Instagram followers skyrocketing from 4,715 to 660,000 within a few days, surpassing New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon in follower count.
Payne responded with gratitude, stating in a message to Scarsini, “Was wondering why my socials were blowing up and found your post, man. Appreciate the love! Gracias, hermano.”
Previously, Payne gained media attention in 2020 during the pandemic. He broke quarantine on a trip in Australia and was charged with drunk driving after taking a golf cart for a joyride with a teammate. He was fined nearly $500 by a Sydney court. Since then, the 32-year-old has maintained a relatively low profile.
Payne will be looking to add to his 50 New Zealand caps at the World Cup, as he is part of Darren Bazeley’s squad for the tournament. New Zealand, currently the lowest-ranked team in the competition, will play its first match against Iran in Los Angeles on June 15. The team will also face Egypt and Belgium in Group G.
