The New York Liberty basketball team showed support for transgender fans during their recent game against the Indiana Fever. This followed their decision to refund a woman whose paid scoreboard message was deemed ineligible.
Outside Barclays Center, a large group of transgender activists protested against the ninth Sophie Cunningham rally of the season. The activists declined to speak with Fox News Digital, surrounding the reporter with flags and signs while chanting ‘Trans Lives Matter.’
During halftime of the Liberty’s 109-102 victory, three supportive messages for transgender fans were displayed on the arena’s scoreboard. These messages welcomed transgender fans and expressed excitement and love for their presence.

Meanwhile, Julie Potter, who had bought tickets and paid for a custom scoreboard message thanking Jennifer Sey, was informed her message was altered. The Liberty refunded Potter after she objected to the rewrite.
The Liberty stated their scoreboard messages are restricted to positive content, and Potter’s original wording didn’t meet their criteria. Potter attended the game with women’s sports activists who had participated in the Cunningham rally.
This event attracted a significant crowd supporting Cunningham, as well as a large counter protest. Transgender activists carried flags, signs, and bubble blowers.
Fox News Digital’s attempts to interview the pro-trans protesters were thwarted. The journalist was encircled by protesters chanting ‘trans lives matter.’ The confrontation led police to escort the reporter for safety reasons.
The protesters, who pre-agreed to avoid media interviews, refused to clarify whether they took a photographer’s glasses or planned to apologize.
Sophie Cunningham commented on the demonstrations, noting the attention had brought more fans to the games. Cunningham expressed the importance of creating a safe space for attendees and emphasized the increased audience is beneficial for inspiring young people.
