NEW YORK – As anticipation builds for the New York Knicks’ pivotal game, a disagreement has surfaced between Knicks owner James Dolan and NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani. The conflict arose when a planned watch party outside Madison Square Garden was canceled before Game 3, attributed by the NYPD to President Donald Trump’s visit.
Dolan responded by canceling the planned watch party for Game 4, which was intended for 1,000 ticketed fans. He defended this move by asserting, “we’re about millions of people.” Dolan criticized the constraints, hoping city officials might allow the plans to proceed differently.
Confusion further unfolded when Mamdani communicated via X that MSG itself requested a permit for only 500-999 attendees, suggesting Dolan chose to cancel the watch party. Around 5 p.m. ET, before Game 4, MSG issued a statement reiterating their decision not to use the permit, emphasizing that limiting attendance to just 1,000 conflicted with their vision of widespread celebration.
Prior watch parties, such as one at Bryant Park, have seen unruly behavior, reflecting a pattern seen throughout the Knicks’ playoff journey. Street closures accompanied the NBA Finals games, adding a further layer of complexity to hosting public events. Dolan remarked on the tight security, quipping it might be easier to enter “Area 51” than MSG.
