The New York Knicks continued their winning streak, taking the lead in the NBA Finals. Jalen Brunson was pivotal, scoring 30 points, while Karl-Anthony Towns added 18 points and 12 rebounds. The team overcame a 14-point deficit in the second half to defeat the San Antonio Spurs 105-95 in Wednesday night’s Game 1.
OG Anunoby contributed 17 points for New York. The Knicks, now with 12 consecutive playoff victories, join the ranks of only seven NBA teams with such streaks. Additionally, this marks the Knicks as the first to defeat San Antonio in a Game 1 of the finals, breaking the Spurs’ 6-0 record.
Victor Wembanyama stood out for the Spurs with 26 points and 12 rebounds, albeit with a six-for-21 shooting record in his finals debut. Stephon Castle scored 17 points, while Julian Champagnie and Dylan Harper added 16 each for San Antonio.
Former Spurs coach Gregg Popovich attended, as he does for all Spurs finals games, watching from a suite. Also present were Spurs icons like David Robinson, Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, Bruce Bowen, and Knicks legends such as Patrick Ewing. Spike Lee, Tracy Morgan, Ben Stiller, Fat Joe, Timothée Chalamet, and countless Knicks fans made the journey. Tommy Sherlock from Brooklyn noted the value in traveling to San Antonio for the game, with costs lower than attending in New York.
Early in the game, the Knicks led the score 14-7, which the Spurs countered with a 20-13 run, sending them to a 10-point lead. The second quarter saw six lead changes, with the Spurs holding a 55-48 edge at halftime. San Antonio increased the lead to 14 midway through the third quarter, before the Knicks surged back with a 22-9 run to tie the game at 76 entering the fourth period.
Midway through the final quarter, New York gained an eight-point advantage. Wembanyama’s free throws gave San Antonio a brief 95-94 lead with 2:16 left. Brunson responded with a decisive corner three, securing the Knicks’ victory.
The Spurs narrowly avoided trailing in previous finals. They had multiple tied scenarios with New Jersey (2003), Detroit (2005), Miami (2013, losing the series in seven games), and again with Miami in 2014.
Game 2 is scheduled for Friday in San Antonio.
