New York Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns and his teammates celebrated a decisive victory in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals, defeating the Cleveland Cavaliers 130-93. This win secured the Knicks’ place in the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999. Towns contributed 19 points and 14 rebounds, while OG Anunoby added 17. The Knicks completed a four-game sweep against the Cavaliers, marking an impressive 11-game winning streak in the playoffs. The previous team to achieve a similar streak was the Golden State Warriors during their 2017 championship run.
Bench player Landry Shamet scored 16 points, while Mikal Bridges and Jalen Brunson each added 15. The Knicks have showcased dominating performances, winning all their playoff games except one by double digits, with an average margin of 23.7 points.
Towns expressed that reviving the hope associated with the Knicks is an honor: “I feel like the word ‘hope’ has been gone from the New York Knicks name for a long time and for me to be part of this team that revives hope is something special.”
The Knicks’ fans, who traveled in large numbers, celebrated in Cleveland as the team pulled their starters with over seven minutes left and a 35-point advantage. Celebrity fans like Spike Lee, Tracy Morgan, and Timothée Chalamet were present.
Head Coach Mike Brown praised his team’s performance, highlighting their 65 points from offensive rebounds and fast-break opportunities: “Our guys played great. You’re in the conference finals and score 65 points off of offensive rebounds and fast break points. I don’t know if I’ve seen that at this point of the year. We wanted to push the pace.” The Knicks led second-chance points 32-5 and fast break points 33-9 over the Cavaliers.
The Knicks are set to face either the defending champions Oklahoma City Thunder or the San Antonio Spurs in the finals. The winner will have a home-court advantage based on regular season performance. The Western Conference finals are tied at two games each, with an upcoming Game 5 in Oklahoma City.
This marks the Knicks’ third finals appearance since their 1973 title win. The team faced losses in 1994 to Houston and 1999 to San Antonio in the finals. Knicks icons Walt “Clyde” Frazier and Patrick Ewing presented the Bob Cousy Trophy to the team. This achievement is notable as Coach Brown reaches the finals in his first year with the team, a feat achieved 15 times since the 1976 NBA-ABA merger.
The Knicks have thrived under Brown, defeating opponents by large margins in clinching games, including a 51-point and 30-point victory against the Atlanta Hawks and Philadelphia 76ers, respectively. Jalen Brunson was pivotal, earning the series MVP with an average of 25.5 points and 7.8 assists.
For Cleveland, Donovan Mitchell scored 31 points. This series marks their first sweep since their 2018 finals loss to Golden State. Coach Kenny Atkinson acknowledged the Knicks’ superior gameplay: “They’re playing better basketball. You got to give them credit. They’re on a heater. I don’t want to detract from what we’ve done, but sometimes you’ve got to give the other team credit.”
Cleveland initially led the game with a strong start but eventually succumbed to the Knicks’ 20-0 run, leading to a first quarter deficit. Jaylon Tyson’s collision with Jalen Brunson and unanswered 3-pointers by Shamet shifted momentum against Cleveland. By halftime, the Knicks enjoyed a 68-49 lead and further secured their victory with a maximum 45-point advantage in the fourth quarter.
James Harden, reflecting on the Cavaliers’ performance, noted the missed chances: “Yes, it was 4-0, but we didn’t give ourselves a chance. Genuinely, I think we are the better team, but series wise we didn’t show it.”
