Nancy Hogshead Advocates for WNBA Eligibility Clarification

Three-time Olympic swimming gold medalist Nancy Hogshead is urging the WNBA to define its eligibility criteria to include only biological females. Hogshead initiated a Change.org petition requesting the league to clarify the term ‘woman’ in its rules. Since its launch on August 14, the petition has gathered more than 11,000 signatures.

In an interview with Fox News Digital, Hogshead stated, ‘We’re calling for the WNBA to clarify that its eligibility rules are for women only. If you want to participate, you have to be a certain age, and you have to be a female.’

Hogshead aims for the petition to reach 100,000 signatures. ‘It’s an 80/20 issue across the country, so we can achieve this,’ she said. ‘We have engaged over a million individuals with our petition materials. We need them to sign.’

The WNBA’s 2026 collective bargaining agreement stipulates that ‘only players who are women are eligible to play in the WNBA.’ However, it lacks a further definition of ‘woman’ or explicit language regarding gender identity or sex assigned at birth.

The debate escalated when former NBA players Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White declared their intentions to enter the 2027 WNBA Draft, asserting their identification as women. League sources have since dismissed their eligibility, characterizing their declarations as publicity stunts.

Hogshead stated that these announcements highlighted inconsistencies in gender identity-based policies. ‘I appreciate their actions because it reveals the WNBA’s and gender ideology’s contradictions,’ Hogshead remarked. ‘Their threat to play and participate in the draft underscores the absurdity of gender ideology.’

The WNBA previously noted there were ‘no immediate eligibility matters’ affecting the league and criticized ‘bad-faith efforts’ to use the debate to ‘demean or marginalize others.’ Commissioner Cathy Engelbert stated the league would continue discussions with the players’ union and other stakeholders.

Hogshead’s petition coincides with rallies outside WNBA games supporting Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham, who has openly opposed transgender participation in female sports. Hogshead praised Cunningham, saying, ‘I really appreciate her stance for women. The more people see Sophie Cunningham, the more they admire her.’
