In Ottawa, Ontario, the Montreal Victoire secured their first PWHL title with a commanding 4-0 victory over the Ottawa Charge on Wednesday night. Abby Roque contributed significantly by scoring twice, while Ann-Renée Desbiens made 23 crucial saves. This win in Game 4 of the Walter Cup Finals was decisive for Montreal.
Maggie Flaherty and Lina Ljungblom also added to the scoreboard. Montreal began the series at home, achieving two overtime wins, but faced a setback with a 2-1 loss in Ottawa on Monday night. The trend of home teams winning finals games was interrupted by Montreal’s success.
Roque expressed her deep appreciation for her teammates, stating, “Just so much love for this group. The heart on this team is incredible. I love everybody and couldn’t be prouder.”
Previously, the Minnesota Frost claimed the first two league titles, defeating Ottawa last year. This season, Montreal overcame Minnesota in the semifinals.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney congratulated the team via social media: “Congratulations to the Montreal Victoire, the 2026 PWHL Walter Cup champions! An incredible and historic season — the Cup comes home for the first time.”
Marie-Philip Poulin, Montreal’s captain, was named playoff MVP. She matched the postseason high with eight points, including two goals and six assists.
“After the CWHL closed its doors, we had uncertainty,” Poulin reflected. “It feels good, really good to win the Walter Cup after coming together as a group.”
Roque’s first goal came at 3:49 in the second period. A deflection off Ottawa defender Rory Guilday’s stick led to the opening score. Later, Roque extended the lead with a short-handed goal at 9:58 of the third.
“I love playoff hockey,” Roque shared. “It’s physical, tough, and fun.” At that time, Poulin was off for interference. Despite Montreal also facing penalties in the first two periods, Ottawa remained penalty-free.
Flaherty’s goal at 6:06 expanded the lead, followed by Ljungblom’s effort with 4:16 left, rounding off the win.
