A woman connected to Minnesota’s significant “Feeding Our Future” scandal is facing charges in a daycare fraud scheme. This follows her appearance in a viral video by influencer Nick Shirley, according to authorities. She allegedly diverted millions of dollars meant for children’s meals.
Fahima Egeh Mahamud was charged with wire fraud and conspiracy to defraud the United States on Wednesday, as per court documents. Mahamud is the owner of a daycare profiled in Shirley’s viral video.
Earlier this year, she was indicted for her alleged involvement in the original $250 million “Feeding Our Future” scheme. Prosecutors accuse her of falsely enrolling Future Leaders Early Learning, a daycare where she was CEO, into the federal child nutrition program, claiming to serve thousands of meals at the center.
Mahamud also faces federal charges in a secondary scheme defrauding the Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP), which supports daycare assistance for low-income families. Between October 2022 and December 2025, she allegedly filed over 13,000 fraudulent claims with CCAP, totaling around $4.6 million. Prosecutors argue these claims were fraudulent because she falsely certified collecting mandatory co-payments from families, a key requirement for federal reimbursement.
The Future Leaders Early Learning center appeared in Shirley’s viral video, as reported by FOX 9 Minneapolis. The video exposed allegedly empty, Somali-operated childcare centers in and near Minneapolis, claiming widespread fraud.
This video triggered a swift, comprehensive crackdown by the Trump administration. Following the video’s release, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) halted approximately $185 million in federal childcare funds to Minnesota.
Furthermore, over 2,000 federal agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) were dispatched to the Twin Cities to intensify investigations and enforcement measures.
