Mike Ditka’s Lasting Legacy: A Tribute to a Football Legend

1 week ago 0

America remembered him as a football legend, the NFL’s symbol of toughness, and the emblem of Chicago. Mike Ditka was more than a Hall of Fame player or a head coach who led the Bears to their unforgettable Super Bowl XX championship. His influence extended well beyond the football field.

I was fortunate to be his partner on the radio for nearly a decade. During our recent show and podcast, “Let’s Go!” on SiriusXM NFL Radio, we paid tribute to Coach Ditka’s life. Myself and co-hosts past and present—Tom Brady, Bill Belichick, Matthew Stafford, Drew Brees, and Peter King—shared what Ditka meant to us and the game.

It’s been difficult since learning of Mike Ditka’s passing on October 9, at age 86. Individuals like Ditka are rare, and his indomitable spirit made him seem immortal.

“America’s Coach,” that’s what I called him, and that’s who he was. My radio partner for many years, he brought joy to every interaction. His life was lived fully; toughness paired with tenderness.

Jim Gray, a 12-time Emmy Award-winning sportscaster and Fox News sports analyst, cherished his connection with Coach Ditka. Under the spotlight, Ditka was known for his fun and for living life to the fullest.

Ditka was unpredictable, never polished, never concerned with being politically correct or universally liked.

Despite this, Ditka was beloved by teammates, players, colleagues, opponents, and even critics. He was Da Coach, Iron Mike.

Jackie Robinson’s tombstone reads, “A life is not important, except in the impact it has on other lives.” Ditka’s influence was immense on Chicago, the NFL, and far beyond.

Ditka stood by me in personal moments too. He traveled to introduce me and offer heartfelt words when I was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

“I tell you what an honor this is when you really think about it. I don’t know anybody else on this Walk of Fame, but I know you,” Ditka said. “What a great honor to be recognized by your peers for your achievements.”

His sentiment was enlightening and empowering to anyone in public life.

Beyond football prowess, Ditka was extraordinarily kind and helped countless individuals—from fellow players to families in need.

Ditka lived by the song lyrics, “My Way,” embodying authenticity.

His presence will be deeply missed. Bears Coach Mike Ditka and Hall of Fame sportscaster Jim Gray share an undated photo, capturing their friendship.

As Ralph Waldo Emerson penned, “When nature removes a great man, people explore the horizon for a successor; but none comes, and none will. His class is extinguished with him.” Ditka was truly in a class of his own.

Every conversation with Mike ended with “God bless, Jimmy.” Following his lead, I say: God bless, Coach.

Tom Brady, 7-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback, echoed gratitude for Ditka’s impact on tight end players like Rob Gronkowski, contributing to Brady’s own success.

Bill Belichick, legendary head coach, acknowledged Ditka’s toughness as a player and coach, remembering fierce competition against him.

Matthew Stafford, NFL MVP, described Ditka’s true presence and authenticity.

Drew Brees recognized Ditka’s visionary leadership.

Peter King highlighted Ditka’s authenticity across all his professional roles.
