Michigan’s Bryce Underwood Faces Pressure After Narrow Victory

At the start of the college football season, few anticipated that Michigan’s quarterback, Bryce Underwood, would face scrutiny following the Wolverines’ opening game against Western Michigan. However, a dramatic conclusion to the match saw Underwood under increased pressure.

Michigan narrowly avoided a significant upset, defeating Western Michigan 13-12 thanks to a Hail Mary pass from Underwood to wide receiver JJ Buchanan. Underwood’s initial attempt missed, but officials added one second to the clock after review, allowing his successful throw.

Despite Underwood’s game-winning pass, head coach Kyle Whittingham emphasized that Underwood’s position as the starting QB isn’t guaranteed. Whittingham stated, “He’s our QB right now, but at some point, we’ve got to turn a corner and see improvement.” He noted the need for performance improvements across the team, including coaches.

Fans reacted on social media after the Wolverines’ narrow win, with some questioning the team’s performance. Whittingham acknowledged the importance of accountability after the close game against Western Michigan, remarking that Underwood’s spot isn’t set in stone.

Underwood, a sophomore, signed a record-breaking NIL deal reportedly worth $12 million upon joining Michigan as the top quarterback of the 2025 class. Despite high expectations, Whittingham is not hesitating to send a message to Underwood through the media.

In the game against the Broncos, Underwood threw for 170 yards, ran for 47 yards, and was responsible for both Michigan touchdowns. Nevertheless, he also threw an interception. Last season, he recorded 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions as a freshman.
