Junior running back Michael Williams is emerging as a valuable addition to West Aurora’s dynamic rushing attack. This development is timely for the team. While senior Bryce Riley, 5-foot-9 and 175 pounds, remains the lead back for coach Nate Eimer, the 5-foot-7, 155-pound Williams is becoming a formidable breakaway threat.

“The best running back duo in the state,” Williams expressed with confidence. “Bryce has taught me a lot over the summer, improving my understanding of the game and sharpening my skills,” he added.

Impressive Performance on Friday Night

Both Williams and Riley delivered standout performances in West Aurora’s 49-21 victory over Streamwood in an Upstate Eight West clash. Each running back surpassed 100 yards rushing, providing crucial energy when needed. Williams made an impact despite not touching the ball until late in the second quarter, scoring a 41-yard touchdown after a 9-yard run. This effort sent West Aurora to halftime with a 28-14 lead, with a prolonged intermission due to nearby lightning.

Coach Eimer stated, “We have a 1-2 punch strategy. We stuck with it because it was effective. Williams was close to breaking big plays recently, and tonight he excelled.”

Key Contributions in the Second Half

Williams excelled after halftime, finishing with 144 yards on 10 carries and scoring two additional touchdowns. Eimer praised his performance, noting Williams’ ability to invigorate the team. “The game was flat, and they focused on Bryce,” Eimer said. “Williams stepped up impressively, and I’m proud of him.”

Riley’s Leadership and Versatility

Riley takes pride in his leadership role on a squad lacking experience. “Michael is talented,” he remarked. “Many underestimate him due to his size, but he has strong skills and is versatile. He’s an asset in the backfield.” Riley’s remarks highlight his encouragement and mentorship to Williams.

Riley’s Spectacular Play

Riley finished with 232 all-purpose yards. He showcased explosive play with touchdowns of 42 and 46 yards before delivering an 88-yard kickoff return touchdown. Riley now has 459 rushing yards for the season, after achieving 144 yards on 10 carries.

“We practiced kick returns extensively,” Riley noted. “Streamwood often kicks to the sideline. Knowing this, I executed well by anticipating the play,” he explained.

Williams, not troubled by his size, remains focused on his growth. “Varsity requires adaptation,” he admitted. “Yet, I’m accustomed to being the smallest, so I’m familiar with the challenge.”
