Michael Phelps Attends Pan Pacific Championships with Family

Michael Phelps, renowned for his incredible achievements in swimming, including 23 gold medals at the Olympics, made an appearance at the Pan Pacific Championships in Irvine, California. A decade after retiring following the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, Phelps brought along two of his young sons, Beckett, age 8, and Maverick, age 6, to witness the event featuring teams from the U.S., Australia, Canada, and Japan.

While the family enjoyed the international meet, Beckett showed a particular interest in swimming. His curiosity was supported by Phelps’ longtime coach, Bob Bowman, who serves as an unofficial grandfather to the children. Bowman offered Beckett tips, suggesting his stroke is more suited for sprinting, which differs from his father’s style.

Phelps and his wife, Nicole, are exploring coaching options in Phoenix, where they reside, to support Beckett’s interest in swimming. Phelps emphasizes the importance of allowing his son to pursue swimming only if it aligns with his interests, prioritizing his happiness over any pressure.

Phelps shared details with Beckett about the dedication required in swimming. He highlighted that the sport demands hard training, reminiscent of his own journey.

Reflecting on his early days, Phelps recalls starting swimming at the age of 7 in Baltimore. Initially, he was hesitant about putting his face in the water, but joined a local club to follow his older sisters and channel his energy. His Olympic journey began at age 15 in Sydney, 2000.

Phelps sees echoes of himself in his son Beckett, particularly in managing emotions. Talking about Beckett’s spirited character, he noted, “He has a hard time turning the switch off, so when he gets angry, he gets angry.” Phelps encourages channeling emotions into the sport, much like he did during his competitive years.
