Michael Lombardi Resigns as UNC Football Program’s General Manager

Michael Lombardi is leaving his position with the North Carolina football program. The announcement came on Thursday when the university disclosed his resignation as the college’s general manager. Lombardi’s departure follows his placement on paid administrative leave amid an internal investigation by UNC.

The investigation, led by UNC’s Office of University Counsel, will continue despite Lombardi stepping down. Lombardi took on his role at Chapel Hill in 2025 before Bill Belichick’s first season with the team. He was considered one of Belichick’s trusted advisors.

UNC issued a statement announcing Lombardi’s resignation, effective September 3, 2026. The university assured that the probe would proceed and corrective actions would be considered determined by investigation outcomes.

Lombardi’s case became public in late July. The Office of University Counsel cited unspecified allegations, and the university declined to comment on these issues due to confidentiality.

After becoming UNC’s general manager, Lombardi held the title of college football’s highest-paid operations executive with a salary of $1.5 million annually. He was one of Belichick’s earliest hires when Belichick joined UNC.

Belichick shared his views on Lombardi’s administrative leave during a press conference on July 30, stating the team was adapting to the situation and took it day by day.

Belichick’s second season began positively as UNC achieved a notable victory over TCU last Saturday. This followed a challenging first season with a record of 4-8.
