Mel Gibson’s ‘The Passion of the Christ’ Returns to Theaters Before Sequel Release

The iconic film, “The Passion of the Christ,” directed by Mel Gibson, will be re-released in theaters across the nation for a limited time this September. This re-release comes ahead of the eagerly awaited sequel, set for 2027. Lionsgate and Fathom Entertainment announced that the 2004 movie, chronicling the last 12 hours of Jesus’ life before his crucifixion, will be available on the big screen from September 10 to September 17. The film has been remastered in 4K quality and enhanced with Dolby Atmos sound.

A special preview of the sequel, “The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One,” set to premiere on May 6, 2027, will be included. The follow-up, “The Resurrection of the Christ: Part Two,” is planned for release on May 25, 2028, coinciding with Memorial Day weekend.

Kevin Grayson, Lionsgate’s President of Worldwide Distribution, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “The Passion of the Christ remains one of the most extraordinary theatrical experiences ever created.” He highlighted how the film transcended its medium, becoming a profound shared cultural and faith event. This remastered version allows existing fans to rediscover the film while introducing it to new audiences.

The original release of “The Passion of the Christ” was a massive success, grossing over $610 million worldwide on a modest $30 million budget. It garnered Academy Award nominations for makeup, score, and cinematography. However, it also drew criticism due to its graphic depiction of violence.

For two decades, “The Passion” held the record for the highest-grossing domestic R-rated film, a title it later lost to the 2024 film “Deadpool & Wolverine.” To celebrate its return, Lionsgate has released a new full-length theatrical trailer. Tickets are available starting July 24 through online platforms and participating theaters, with locations listed on the Fathom Entertainment website.

The film originally starred Jim Caviezel as Jesus of Nazareth. Ray Nutt, CEO of Fathom Entertainment, noted the film’s significant impact on culture, stating, “Few modern-day films have made as much of an impact on the cultural landscape as ‘The Passion of the Christ.'” Caviezel will not return, as Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen will portray Jesus in the sequels. Mariela Garriga will take on the role of Mary Magdalene, succeeding Monica Bellucci.

Gibson has conveyed that the upcoming sequels will delve into “spiritual realms” and the battle for “the soul of mankind.” The director regards this film series as a vital part of his life’s work, describing it as “far more than a film” and a mission he has nurtured for over 20 years to narrate what he believes is “the most important story in human history.”
