Mel Brooks, at the age of 100, was determined to take part in the sequel to ‘Spaceballs’. Daphne Zuniga, who portrays Princess Vespa, shared during the ‘Melrose Place’ 90s Con panel that Brooks insisted on filming his scenes ahead of time. He stated, ‘You better film me now because I’m 100.’

The upcoming sequel, titled ‘Spaceballs: The New One’, includes both returning cast members and new faces. It will premiere on April 23rd of next year. Fans can look forward to Rick Moranis reprising his role as Lord Dark Helmet. Bill Pullman also returns and will appear alongside his real-life son, Lewis Pullman, who plays the prince. Keke Palmer joins the cast as well.

The original ‘Spaceballs’, co-written and produced by Mel Brooks, debuted in 1987 when Brooks was 60. The film, a parody of ‘Star Wars’, follows Lone Starr (played by Pullman) and his sidekick Barf (John Candy) as they set out to save Princess Vespa from Dark Helmet and President Skroob, a character played by Brooks himself.

Rick Moranis’ antics as Dark Helmet made the character unforgettable. Brooks described to Fox News Digital how Moranis’ portrayal often caused the crew to burst into laughter, ruining several takes. Brooks humorously shared how Moranis’ performance incurred extra costs due to continuous disruptions during filming.

After nearly 40 years, Moranis reflected on returning to the role. During a San Diego Comic-Con panel, he mentioned the odd but rewarding experience of reuniting with former co-stars and introducing new actors. Moranis shared candidly about the surreal feeling of wearing the famous helmet again, explaining how the role left him nostalgic yet excited.
