Massive Wildfires Ravage Southwest France and Spain, Forcing Hundreds of Thousands to Evacuate

Wildfires in southwest France have led to the evacuation of 55,000 people overnight. The crisis has displaced a total of 220,000 individuals within the Gironde region, near Bordeaux. Spain also faced evacuations due to fires on its east coast.

Strong winds and dry conditions are complicating efforts to contain the blaze in France’s Gironde region. Authorities issued evacuation orders for five more localities near Bordeaux.

The situation remains very unfavorable, said French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez. The fire’s unpredictable nature, generating its own winds, poses significant challenges.

Pope Leo XIV has called for prayers for victims of the devastating wildfires in France and Spain. In Gironde, 42,000 hectares have burned, largely consisting of forests and scrubland.

Fire crews are working tirelessly with support from planes and helicopters. Farmers aid by supplying water to maintain firefighting efforts continuously.

The number of firefighters in Gironde has reached 2,500, along with military support. 75 firefighters have suffered injuries in the course of their duties. Hundreds of homes have been destroyed.

The blaze has turned into self-sustaining firestorms, generating lightning capable of sparking new fires.

Forecast high temperatures could complicate firefighting efforts, warned Gironde Prefect Sophie Brocas.

Bordeaux Mayor Thomas Cazenave reported the fire is 15 kilometers away from the city. An evacuation of Bordeaux is not currently planned.

A nearby exhibition center serves as an emergency shelter for evacuees, providing essential supplies.

Another fire in the Landes region has led to 36,000 people evacuating, increasing total displacements in France to over 250,000.

A separate wildfire in the Var region on the Mediterranean has resulted in nearly 3,000 evacuations.

In Spain, fires have burned uncontrolled near Madrid, prompting evacuations in the Valencia region. The death of a man in Manises marked Spain’s first recorded wildfire-related fatality.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez mentioned difficult hours ahead but stated progress in containing the flames.

An estimated 76,000 people are evacuated in Spain, with 30,000 confined to their homes. The uncertainty over the fate of properties troubles evacuees.

Rocío Domínguez, who evacuated from Chapinería, expressed concerns about her home’s condition, fearing immense loss.
