Brussels — A tragic accident occurred in Belgium on Tuesday when a train collided with a school minibus. According to the country’s interior minister, several victims were involved, though their conditions remain unconfirmed. Sources speaking anonymously to AFP stated that multiple fatalities occurred among the bus passengers. Reuters echoed these reports, citing local sources, though official confirmations from police or authorities have yet to be provided.
Minister Bernard Quintin expressed his sorrow on social media, stating, “With great dismay, I learnt of the tragic accident in Buggenhout, where a school bus was struck by a train. My thoughts go out to the victims and their loved ones. I wish the injured much strength.”
Images from the incident revealed the minibus on its side at the railway crossing in Buggenhout, showing significant damage to its front end. Emergency services were actively responding to the collision.
Frederic Sacre, spokesperson for the Belgian rail network operator, emphasized, “The impact was extremely violent,” and labeled the situation as “dramatic.”
The collision occurred at approximately 8:08 AM, with the train set to stop at a nearby station roughly a kilometer away. The site of the incident was identified as the Vierhuizen railway crossing.
