Inter Miami announced that Lionel Messi is dealing with an issue in his left hamstring. This comes just a week before Argentina’s preparation for their World Cup defense begins. Messi was tested on Monday, likely involving an MRI, and was diagnosed with muscle fatigue causing overload in his left hamstring. This prevented him from completing Inter Miami’s match against the Philadelphia Union on Sunday night.
Recovery times for such injuries vary based on how severe they are. Inter Miami stated that Messi’s return will depend on his progress. Messi left the match in the 73rd minute after showing signs of discomfort, such as grabbing the back of his leg. He walked off without help and went straight to the locker room. Despite his absence, Inter Miami secured a 6-4 victory, with Messi contributing two assists in the first half.
The game conditions were challenging due to heavy rain creating slippery surfaces. It remains unclear if these conditions contributed to Messi’s injury or affected his decision to exit the match. The team simply cited “physical discomfort” as the reason for his substitution.
Argentina is scheduled to play two friendlies before the World Cup. These matches are on June 6 in College Station, Texas, against Honduras, and June 9 in Auburn, Alabama, against Iceland. The venues are large college football stadiums with significant capacities. Argentina’s Group J matches include Algeria in Kansas City on June 16, Austria in Arlington, Texas on June 22, and Jordan in Arlington again on June 27.
Messi has participated in five World Cups and received the Golden Ball twice, in 2014 and 2022, for being the best player in the tournament. He is the only player to have won this award more than once since it was established in 1982.
