Life Through Cancer: A Family’s Journey of Love and Resilience

9 minutes ago 0

One year ago, Brittany M. Bohacik’s life changed forever with a call from her husband. Brittany, then 39, was caught off guard when her phone rang. Her husband Rob, at 43, was on the line from the emergency room. He urged her to come to the hospital, but at that moment, she had no inkling of the profound change awaiting their family.

A Seemingly Ordinary Weekend

In early July 2025, Rob started experiencing stomach discomfort. The couple assumed it was nothing more than a mild ailment like food poisoning or a virus. Rob persevered through his discomfort, continuing with his roles as a husband and father to their eight-year-old daughter, Ava.

The gravity of his situation only became apparent when Rob, unable to ignore his symptoms any longer, drove to the hospital. Brittany recalls how typical that moment felt. No ambulance arrival or dramatic scene suggested their lives were irrevocably changing.

The Diagnosis

Eighteen days later, on July 22, 2025, their lives were upended. Rob was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic adenocarcinoma, which had already spread to his liver. The news was devastating. They had been living normal lives, focusing on everyday matters and planning for the weekend. Suddenly, their world centered around chemotherapy and survival statistics.

Many assume there must have been warnings they ignored, but Brittany insists there were none. Their life story seemed to abruptly become one of battling cancer.

The Battle Begins

For the next eight months, Brittany devoted herself to one mission: helping Rob survive. She immersed herself in research, reaching out to doctors, exploring treatments, and understanding complex medical terms. Brittany held dual roles, being a caregiver and managing the intricacies of cancer treatments, while also maintaining her role as a wife and mother.

Rob’s genetic testing revealed a BRCA2 mutation, but not a KRAS mutation. This KRAS wild-type tumor was uncommon and prompted further molecular testing for potential treatment options.

Their search for help led them to Germany for a dendritic-cell immunotherapy procedure, though success was uncertain. Brittany’s hopes were modest: she sought more time, even if only for ordinary moments shared on a couch or minor disagreements.

Juggling Multiple Roles

As Rob’s condition declined, Brittany’s responsibilities multiplied. She became a researcher, scheduler, caregiver, and more. Despite exhaustion, she clung to each moment with Rob.

Reflecting on her journey, Brittany wishes she had taken more time to be present and cherish the small moments—capturing memories, asking questions, and being with Rob beyond the medical focus.

A Legacy of Love and Resilience

Rob passed away in March 2026 at 44 years old. Brittany felt a sudden void. Her life had centered around keeping Rob alive, and now, that purpose had vanished.

Brittany began sharing Rob’s story on social media. Many reach out with medical queries, while others seek advice on dealing with grief, parenting, and finding joy amidst loss. For Brittany, these interactions make sharing their journey worthwhile.

Rob was not solely defined by his illness. Brittany sees him as a beloved husband, Ava’s father, and someone she always imagined growing old with. She insists cancer may have dominated the end of his life, but it does not define his life entirely. Rob was loved and valued, and he remains important to those who knew him.
