Legal Settlement Reached Following Las Vegas Grand Prix Drain Incident

The inaugural Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix weekend had an unexpected twist during its first practice session when a drain cover incident disrupted events. Carlos Sainz, then driving for Ferrari, hit a loose drain cover, severely damaging his car’s floor and energy components while also affecting Esteban Ocon’s Alpine vehicle.

This incident led to the practice session being red-flagged and eventually canceled. Consequently, the second practice session faced hours of delays as crews worked on circuit repairs and secured other drain covers. The delay caused many fans to leave ahead of the next session.

Attorney Steve Dimopoulos responded to the incident by filing a class action lawsuit, alleging that attempts to rectify the situation were insufficient. According to the Las Vegas Review Journal, a federal judge granted preliminary approval for a settlement with LVGP and its parent company, Liberty Media Corp.

The settlement involves a $3.05 million fund allocated for approximately 32,000 eligible ticket holders, as stated by Dimopoulos. Individual payouts will depend on ticket type, participation rates, legal fees, costs, and administrative expenses.

The number of claimants will determine the precise payout each person receives, and if participation is maximized, individuals might get only a modest compensation.

Fortunately, subsequent races in the three-year history of the Las Vegas Grand Prix proceeded smoothly. The event remains on the F1 schedule through 2037. However, the 2023 drain cover incident led to significant repercussions for Carlos Sainz’s Ferrari, necessitating a new engine and resulting in a ten-place grid penalty during the championship battle against Mercedes.
