Josh Turek, the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in Iowa, recently made remarks on President Donald Trump’s handling of the U.S.-Mexico border. He stated that Trump performed better at the border compared to former President Joe Biden. Turek also highlighted potential areas where he could collaborate with Trump if elected.
In an interview with ABC News’ Jonathan Karl on This Week, Turek said, “I agree with Trump. He’s done a better job on the border than Biden, for sure.” He expressed support for removing private equity from housing and agreed with Trump’s views on eliminating taxes on tips, overtime, and Social Security.
Turek’s campaign emphasizes cooperation with Trump on immigration. In a campaign message, Turek promised to work with any leader, including Trump, to secure the border and halt drug trafficking into Iowa.
Moderate Stance
Identifying as a “proud moderate” and a “commonsense prairie populist,” Turek outlined his priorities, which include livable wages, affordable housing, healthcare, educational improvements, and infrastructure. He also aims to tackle corruption and boost Iowa’s public services.
While declining to comment broadly on the Democratic Party’s political direction, Turek emphasized his focus on Iowa’s needs.
Campaign Against Hinson
Turek competes against Republican Representative Ashley Hinson, endorsed by Trump, in an intensely watched race. A Democratic victory in Iowa holds significance for the party’s Senate control aspirations. Trump previously won the state by a notable margin in 2024.
Turek stated his intent not to “vilify people for voting for Trump,” acknowledging Trump’s correct identification of issues like grocery prices and corruption. However, he criticized the consolidation of wealth during Trump’s term.
Concerned about foreign policy under Trump’s administration, Turek cited issues such as trade tariffs and the Iran war. He projected rising costs affecting Iowa’s citizens.
Turek highlighted his recognition as a bipartisan and effective legislator, stressing decision-making rooted in his district’s needs and personal conscience.
Hinson’s Border Policy
Last year, Hinson identified illegal immigration as a top constituent concern. She discussed mechanisms for self-deportation using the CDP One app and stressed legal pathways for immigrants to work in agriculture.
Hinson differentiated the workforce visa from amnesty, advocating for legal immigration frameworks in critical industries.
Cross-Party Border Security Efforts
Trump focused on strict border enforcement during his presidency, including extending the border wall. Turek’s comparison emerges in the context of increased border crossings during Biden’s term as per AP analysis.
The AP reported rising migration numbers reaching their peak under Biden, with the implementation of stringent asylum policies followed by declines in border crossings. Other Democrats, like Texas Senate candidate James Talarico, now emphasize border security, confirming a bipartisan interest in addressing immigration challenges.
