Former Child Actor Bobb’e J. Thompson’s Sentencing

Bobb’e J. Thompson, once a child actor, received a 30-month federal prison sentence after admitting to possession of a firearm by a felon. His case underscores recurring legal challenges faced by some child stars as they mature. Thompson’s punishment comprises over two years in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. This adds to a roster of legal troubles that former child entertainers have encountered, linking their careers with the criminal justice system.

Authorities arrested Thompson in September 2025 after detecting his vehicle speeding at 104 mph in a 70 mph zone, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Iowa. Officers uncovered marijuana and a loaded stolen handgun in a backpack he owned. The actor pleaded guilty in April, receiving his sentence on Wednesday from U.S. District Judge Leonard T. Strand. Federal prosecutors highlighted Thompson’s prior convictions, including assault-related offenses and a previous firearms count.

Disney Channel Stars Facing Legal Issues

Thompson featured in the show That’s So Raven as Stanley and further advanced his career with roles in programs like Wild ‘N Out, House of Payne, and assorted films. His current federal gun conviction represents a significant legal setback.

Orlando Brown, another Disney alum, has experienced numerous legal difficulties including arrests related to domestic disputes, drug possession accusations, trespassing, and court violations. Through media engagements, he has shared his struggles against substance abuse and homelessness, highlighting a visible example of a Disney child actor facing both legal and private challenges post-success.

Shia LaBeouf, known from Even Stevens, has faced repeated arrests and controversies in his adult life. His recent conviction arose from simple battery charges tied to a Mardi Gras incident in New Orleans. A string of arrests in Georgia and New York, alongside a civil lawsuit settled with singer FKA twigs, paint a picture of LaBeouf’s legal chronicles.

Mitchel Musso, recognized as Oliver from Hannah Montana, confronted public intoxication and theft allegations in Texas in 2023. Key charges were subsequently dropped.

Adam Hicks from Zeke and Luther and Lemonade Mouth confronted serious accusations, including armed robbery in California in 2018. Macaulay Culkin, famed for Home Alone, faced Oklahoma arrest charges in 2004 when police encountered marijuana and prescribed substances in his vehicle. Edward Furlong, from Terminator 2: Judgment Day, experienced recurrent domestic violence allegations, probation breaches, and incarcerations during the early 2010s. He was initially apprehended in 2001 for driving without a license, leading to further arrests related to restraining order violations against his then-wife. He was sentenced to jail for violating probation terms.

Haley Joel Osment’s legal troubles emerged from a single-vehicle incident in Los Angeles in 2006 when he was 18. He confronted DUI and marijuana possession charges following the crash. The widely-publicized matter involved one of Hollywood’s identifiable former child stars transitioning into adult roles, resulting in probation, rehabilitation, and fines.

Tatum O’Neal, historic Oscar recipient for Paper Moon at age 10, experienced addiction-related affairs visible through her 2008 arrest in New York City. Police accused her of procuring crack cocaine near her apartment. She later accepted substance abuse treatments, noting the impact across her life stages.

TV Sitcom Child Stars and Legal Encounters

Darius McCrary, viewed as Eddie Winslow from Family Matters, encountered arrest in 2025 related to outstanding child support obligations and court appearances in Michigan. He entered a no-contest plea.

Todd Bridges from Diff’rent Strokes, faced serious legal entanglements involving drug dependence, weapons charges, and attempted murder allegations in the late 1980s and 1990s, concluding in acquittal. Bridges later elaborated on regaining stability post-addiction.

Dana Plato from Diff’rent Strokes was arrested in 1991 after attempting to rob a video store with a pellet gun. Her death in 1999 was ruled an accidental overdose and suicide.

Zachery Ty Bryan from Home Improvement faced multiple arrests recently, accused of domestic violence and assault incidents from 2020 to 2025. After arrest in 2025, he received a 16-month jail term following a DUI conviction.
