Keri Russell shared insights about the early stages of her relationship with Matthew Rhys on the “Dear Chelsea” podcast. She recounted the exciting and clandestine nature of their romance while working on “The Americans.” Russell mentioned, “We were falling in love, staying up all night, having fun, and keeping things sneaky and enjoyable.”
Initially meeting briefly before their work together, Russell and Rhys reconnected on the set of “The Americans” in 2012. Their relationship became public in April 2014. The couple has a son, Sam, born in May 2016. Russell also has two children, River and Willa, from a previous marriage.
Discussing her views on marriage with podcast host Chelsea Handler, Russell explained she does not see the necessity of marrying Rhys. “I’ve had a big party. I get to dress up all the time,” she remarked, reflecting on changing norms. Russell sees having a child together as “forever” and views traditional marriage concepts as outdated.
Russell is promoting the fourth season of “The Diplomat” on Netflix, where she plays U.S. ambassador Kate Wyler. Russell enjoys portraying a character who is smart yet flawed, as Kate often finds herself in challenging situations.
After Rhys’s recent Emmy win for “Widow’s Bay” and “The Beast In Me,” Russell clarified that she advised him he didn’t need to mention her in his speech. She emphasized understanding, “I said, ‘Take me off your plate. You don’t have to thank me. I know you love me,’” expressing that the moment was Rhys’s own.
