Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Aidan O’Connell was inactive for Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints after announcing the death of his father earlier in the week. Before deactivating his social media account, O’Connell shared a photo on Instagram with his parents.
In his post, O’Connell expressed deep sorrow for the passing of his father, Jim. He described his father as a gift, impacting countless lives, and being a great man to those who knew him. He conveyed the immense loss felt by his family and their reliance on faith for comfort and peace during this challenging time. He expressed gratitude for the support and prayers they have received, asking for continued prayers as they remember and honor his father’s life and the influence he had.
O’Connell referenced the Heidelberg Catechism to express his comfort in belonging to his Savior, Jesus Christ, both in life and death. He paid tribute to his father with the words, “Rest in peace, Dad. We love you and will miss you more than words can say.”
Drafted in the fourth round of 2023, Aidan O’Connell has been with the Raiders, playing in 21 games and amassing 3,932 yards and 20 touchdown passes. This season, he started as QB3 following the signing of Kirk Cousins and the drafting of Fernando Mendoza as the top pick.
