2 weeks ago 0

The New York Knicks staged a historic comeback, rallying from a 29-point deficit to defeat the San Antonio Spurs 107-106. This victory brings the Knicks within reach of their first championship since 1973, leading the NBA Finals 3-1. OG Anunoby secured the win by tipping in a missed three-point shot by Jalen Brunson with only 1.2 seconds left in the game.

The Knicks’ chances seemed bleak at halftime, trailing by 27 points. However, Jalen Brunson fueled the comeback with 36 points, while Anunoby contributed 33, capitalizing on a crucial moment as Brunson’s shot teetered on the rim. Knicks coach Mike Brown emphasized Anunoby’s importance on the offensive glass, declaring that no play was bigger in Knicks history.

Game 5 is scheduled for Saturday night in San Antonio. No team had ever recovered from such a deficit in a finals game since Boston came back against the Lakers in 2008. The Spurs previously led 81-52 in the third quarter. The record for the biggest playoff comeback remains the Los Angeles Clippers’ 31-point recovery against Golden State in 2019.

The Knicks had their 13-game winning streak interrupted in Game 3. The Spurs, initially propelled by Victor Wembanyama’s strong performance, seemed poised for victory, establishing the largest halftime lead in finals history by a visiting team. Yet, their momentum waned in the second half.

Wembanyama accumulated 24 points and 13 rebounds but struggled with his shooting. The Knicks limited the Spurs to 14 points on 4-for-20 shooting in the third quarter, utilizing a 13-0 run to close the gap.

The drama unfolded in a packed Madison Square Garden, where fans sang along to Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’.” Notable attendees included Taylor Swift, while restrictions from President Donald Trump’s previous visit persisted.

The Knicks secured their chance by orchestrating a strong second-half defense, particularly during a third-quarter surge. Despite a late lead change, the Knicks persisted with Dylan Harper scoring 21 points, and De’Aaron Fox and Devin Vassell each adding 18 for the Spurs.

The Spurs must regroup to push the series back to New York for Game 6 on Tuesday. Wembanyama acknowledged their second-half shortcomings, noting a lack of intensity. Despite tensions, with Wembanyama targeted on the court, the Knicks overcame their early obstacles. He missed two crucial free throws, allowing the Knicks another opportunity.

The Spurs initially rushed to a 12-2 lead and maintained control for most of the first half. However, their shooting cooled in the second half, ultimately leading to the Knicks’ remarkable comeback.
