Melat Kiros, a 29-year-old democratic socialist, made waves with her primary victory in Colorado, defeating long-standing incumbent Diana DeGette who served 29 years in Congress. This win highlights a growing trend where far-left candidates are gaining success in Democratic primaries. Such victories could significantly influence the Democratic Party’s future platform and trajectory.
Elsewhere, Donavan McKinney, supported by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), triumphed in Michigan’s 13th Congressional District. He unseated incumbent Rep. Shri Thanedar. From New York to Colorado, candidates like socialist Darializa Avila Chevalier and Melat Kiros have shown the DSA’s growing impact on the party.
Bernie Sanders and the DSA have outlined demands for changes in the Democratic Party after socialists won significant elections in New York.
State Rep. McKinney, a Democrat from Michigan, emphasized priorities such as affordability, climate justice, and removing financial influence from politics. During his campaign, he criticized Thanedar’s wealth and argued that it disconnects him from the district’s lived experiences.
Thanedar, although part of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, distanced himself from the DSA, primarily over his support for Israel. He stated his disagreement with the DSA’s views following antisemitic events in New York City. Thanedar noted his pride in American exceptionalism, speaking about America as a great country of immigrants.
McKinney accused Thanedar of representing a problem within the party due to his wealth and corporate affiliations, contrasting his multimillionaire status with the interests of the district’s constituents.
With the Democratic nomination in hand, McKinney will compete in the general election on November 3.
