Senator Mitch McConnell Continues Recovery at Home

Senator Mitch McConnell, a Republican from Kentucky, has left a rehabilitation center and is recovering at home. He was initially admitted to the hospital on June 14 following a fall. Later, McConnell, 84, shared that he was in physical therapy due to the incident. While he has not announced when he’ll return to the Capitol, the Senate will soon begin its traditional August recess, and no votes are expected for five weeks.

McConnell stated, “On the advice of my doctors, I’ll maintain an intensive regimen of physical therapy from home during the state work period, and I’ll continue to engage with my staff and colleagues on important Senate business.” His office released this statement, confirming ongoing communication with his team.

During childhood, McConnell had polio, and he has noted struggles with walking and climbing stairs in adulthood. The Office of the Attending Physician reported that McConnell’s rehabilitation includes multiple daily sessions to build strength and prevent future falls. He intends to complete his seventh term, ending in January.

His absence has been notable, especially as Republicans faced challenges pushing a farm bill forward in committee, highlighted by a statement from the committee’s chairman, Sen. John Boozman from Arkansas. Boozman discussed the bill with McConnell and emphasized McConnell’s desire to support Kentucky’s farmers.

Critics, including Kentucky’s Democratic governor Andy Beshear, have questioned McConnell’s transparency regarding his health. Beshear urged the senator to verify his capability to continue serving or consider resignation after his hospitalization.
