Kailey Skurka Nears Milestone in Volleyball Career

As Kailey Skurka approaches the conclusion of her four-year varsity volleyball journey at Lake Central, an important milestone is on the horizon. With seven regular-season matches and at least one postseason match remaining, Skurka requires 51 kills to achieve 1,000 in her career. The 5-foot-11 outside hitter has been working towards this since her freshman year, given her confidence in reaching it with four years on the varsity team.

Skurka, committed to Seton Hill, has been instrumental in the team with season highs of 195 kills, 115 digs, and 219 serve receptions. Before facing Duneland Athletic Conference leader Chesterton, the Indians held a record of 11-6 overall and 7-1 in conference play. Coach Naveed Nizam recognizes Skurka’s contribution to a balanced offense and her potential lasting legacy at Lake Central. Nizam plans to establish the 1,000 club, honoring players for achieving significant career assists, kills, or digs.

Skurka, celebrated for her leadership and presence on the court, inspires her teammates, including senior outside hitter Arielle Carter-Reed. Carter-Reed, boasting 91 kills, 109 digs, 215 serve receptions, and a team-high of 23 aces, is motivated by Skurka’s performance. Their partnership, starting at age 12, pushes Carter-Reed to match and surpass Skurka’s capabilities. She respects Skurka’s input and strives to meet the expected team standards.

The team aims for success in the DAC and sectionals, driven by Skurka’s leadership and aspirations. Skurka plans to carry her competitive spirit to college, eager to face new challenges, meet people, and begin a new chapter. Her drive for excellence will continue as she ventures into a promising collegiate volleyball career.
