Josh Brolin’s Journey to Sobriety and New Role in ‘Whalefall’

The trailer for 20th Century Studios’ Whalefall introduces a stellar cast including Austin Abrams, Josh Brolin, John Ortiz, and Elisabeth Shue. The film, directed by Brian Duffield, showcases Brolin in a new role as he continues to embrace a sober lifestyle.

Josh Brolin, known for his role in Dune, has made sobriety a daily commitment. He starts each morning by joining a recovery meeting on Zoom at 6 a.m. sharp. Brolin shared with The Telegraph his transition from a life of drinking struggles to sobriety, stating, “Drinking got boring in the end.” His journey reflects his dedication to a healthier lifestyle.

Brolin recounted an incident where he woke up on the sidewalk outside his home—a turning point that made him evaluate the path he wanted his life to take. He credits the daily meetings as crucial to his recovery, explaining, “I love being sober. I’m having way more fun now than I ever did drinking, and I never end up in jail, which is a real bonus.”

In addition to alcohol, Brolin has been candid about another addiction: nicotine. During a 2024 episode of the podcast WTF with Marc Maron, he confessed to habitually using nicotine pouches after quitting chewing tobacco. He described waking up with nicotine pouches in his mouth unconsciously and shared how his wife noticed the habit even while he was asleep.

Nicotine pouches, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, contain nicotine and flavorings absorbed through the gums. Despite their convenience, they are highly addictive, and the long-term health implications require more research.

Brolin’s memoir, From Under the Truck, delves into his personal battles with addiction and his journey to recovery. He emphasizes the challenges he’s faced while overcoming nicotine dependency in light of his sobriety from alcohol.

Josh Brolin’s influence extends beyond personal stories. He is well-known for roles in films such as Avengers: Endgame and No Country for Old Men. In Whalefall, he stars with Austin Abrams and Elisabeth Shue, continuing to captivate audiences with his performances and personal progress.
