1 hour ago 0

John Goodman recently shared his thoughts on the effects of fame during a discussion with the SAG-AFTRA Foundation. The 74-year-old actor, known for his role in the hit sitcom ‘Roseanne’, acknowledged the overwhelming nature of his celebrity status.

In his candid conversation, Goodman expressed regret for not handling fame better. He revealed, ‘I wish I would have taken to it better. I didn’t. I was frightened … I’m my own worst enemy, by far.’ This speaks to the difficulties he faced during his rise in popularity.

Goodman struggled with the sudden fame that followed his success in ‘Roseanne’.

When interviewer Joe Neumaier inquired about the evolution of his career in the late ’80s and early ’90s, Goodman described the transition from an independent actor to a celebrity. ‘It changed, that’s when I was told, ‘You better get a publicist and get a hold of this stuff.’ But I had a bad time dealing with how famous I got,’ he explained, highlighting the pressures linked to his newfound prominence.

Goodman emphasized the challenges of promoting films, stating, ‘The things you have to do to sell a film, they’re not ideal, but they need to be done.’ He acknowledged the importance of supporting the team’s efforts given the financial stakes involved.

The actor agreed to join ‘Roseanne’ to avoid constant travel and quickly connected with fellow star Roseanne Barr. Reflecting on the show’s impact, Goodman noted, ‘At the time, the hot shows in television were all wealth-oriented, like ‘Dynasty’ and ‘Dallas’. We were sober reality. Just because we’re poor doesn’t make us stupid.’ The show’s portrayal of family bonds through laughter and love resonated with audiences.

Following his tenure on ‘Roseanne’, Goodman starred in notable films including ‘The Flintstones’, ‘The Big Lebowski’, and ‘Monsters Inc.’. He reprised his role as Dan Conner in the ‘Roseanne’ reboot and its spin-off, ‘The Conners’. Despite the reboot’s short run due to Barr’s controversial comments, ‘The Conners’ continued successfully.

Goodman shared mixed feelings about the reboot, telling The Hollywood Reporter, ‘I didn’t think [the ‘Roseanne’ reboot] would go beyond the initial five or six episodes. But then Roseanne got fired.’ The show’s unexpected extension into ‘The Conners’ provided an enjoyable experience.

On his relationship with Barr, Goodman admitted they hadn’t spoken for several years, saying, ‘I’d rather doubt if she wants to talk to me.’ Barr expressed feeling ‘betrayed’ by Goodman, linked to his limited appearances in later seasons.
