Joe Thomas: From Franchise Star to Hall of Fame Farmer

Joe Thomas, formerly of the Cleveland Browns, is celebrated not for loud displays but for the consistent excellence he brought to the field. On draft day in 2007, Thomas revealed his character by choosing to fish with his father on Lake Michigan rather than attending the NFL Draft in New York. He received the Browns’ call while fishing, ultimately becoming the third overall pick.

Recently, Thomas was inducted into the Cleveland Browns Ring of Honor during a game against Baltimore Ravens in 2023. Now retired, he is focused on life beyond the NFL, including a venture named Hall of Fame Farms in Wisconsin. During his appearance on OutKick Outdoors, Thomas talked about his unforgettable draft day, his health transformation, and his cattle business.

On draft day, while others donned suits and made headlines, Thomas opted for a fishing rod. Despite warnings that teams might disapprove, he chose to spend the day fishing with his dad. With a flip phone in hand, he accepted the call from the Cleveland Browns and expressed his eagerness to join them. This down-to-earth approach has been a constant in Thomas’s life.

Following his 2018 retirement, Thomas faced health challenges from playing at over 310 pounds. He recalled severe inflammation and pain, leading to discussions of a knee replacement. Instead, he chose to focus on weight loss. Thomas embraced intermittent fasting and eliminated processed foods from his diet, resulting in reduced pain and improved mobility.

The commitment to health eventually influenced his agricultural interests. His family farm shifted focus after his children insisted livestock was needed, forming Hall of Fame Farms. Thomas applied lessons from football to farming, treating cattle with care akin to athletes, aiming for top-tier beef production.

Thomas’s farming enterprise now produces Wagyu and Certified Angus beef, with premium offerings like steaks and tallow. The greater reward, however, lies in his lifestyle on the farm. He relishes raising his four children, tending to the land, and enjoying the fruits of his labor.

Whether fishing in Canada or working at the farm, Thomas finds joy in outdoor activities with his kids. He emphasizes the importance of passing down his passion for nature and fishing, seeing their joy as a personal accomplishment.
