Jeremy Scott, a 47-year-old from Winter Garden, Florida, faces life changes following an unexpected diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. Formerly in the automotive industry, Scott transitioned to a career in mortgage loan origination at mid-life. Despite being active as a husband, father, gym-goer, and frequent visitor to Disney, he now navigates the emotional landscape of Alzheimer’s.
Scott chose to share his journey on social media. He hopes to challenge the common image associated with the disease. “People often think of Alzheimer’s as affecting only older individuals far along in the disease,” he explained.
“Life didn’t follow the plan I had written for it. Apparently, life didn’t read my plan.”
A ‘Weird’ Experience at Disney
The diagnosis of Alzheimer’s came on September 12, though Scott remembers signs appearing earlier. A notable moment occurred at Disney’s Contemporary Resort, where he searched extensively for a water bottle, only to find it later in plain sight.
“Everyone loses things occasionally. But this felt different,” he said. As time progressed, other symptoms appeared, such as losing his train of thought and struggling with word retrieval.
Understanding Alzheimer’s Progression
Alzheimer’s disease could begin years before clinical symptoms arise, according to a study in GeroScience. The study highlights the potential of blood biomarkers in identifying early signs, suggesting the disease may start before age 45.
Scott experienced a brain hemorrhage in 2021, leading to additional neurological challenges. This history complicated his diagnosis. Even with prior testing and scans, hearing the official diagnosis was impactful.
Living with Alzheimer’s at 47
Currently, Scott finds short-term memory and losing his train of thought most disruptive. Stress exacerbates these symptoms. Speech therapy and cognitive rehabilitation are part of his adaptation process.
Misconceptions About Alzheimer’s
Many people assume Alzheimer’s always presents obvious symptoms from onset. “You don’t look like you have Alzheimer’s” is often said to Scott, who emphasizes the varying stages of the disease. The condition isn’t exclusive to the elderly, and Scott aims to raise awareness about younger onset.
Life Redefined
Scott’s diagnosis reshaped his priorities. Once driven by career ambitions, he now values presence and meaningful experiences. Creating content, writing a book, and family time are among his new focuses.
Alzheimer’s has led Scott to embrace living in the moment. Updating his followers on daily experiences, therapy sessions, and even humor, Scott finds solace in sharing. He aims to offer comfort to others potentially facing similar situations.
Continuing the Journey
Scott looks ahead, figuring out his next chapter. Creative endeavors and advocacy around Alzheimer’s are priorities. He acknowledges moments of questioning, yet his motto remains: one step, one day at a time.
Scott views Alzheimer’s not as a limitation, but an opportunity to alter how he narrates his story. Eager to contribute positively, he hopes to prove that the diagnosis doesn’t mark the end.
