Jacob Young’s Stunning Defensive Play for the Washington Nationals

Washington Nationals outfielder Jacob Young amazed fans with an incredible catch during a game against the Miami Marlins. The moment took place in the third inning of the Nationals’ 6-2 defeat at loanDepot Park.

The Marlins led 1-0 with one out and a runner on first base. Heriberto Hernández, an outfielder for the Marlins, hit Jackson Kent’s 86-mph slider deep into left-center field. The ball seemed bound for extra bases.

Young skillfully tracked the deep fly ball and precisely timed his jump as he approached the outfield wall. He leaped into the air, placing his right leg against the mesh fence to gain height, and used his right hand to reach further, catching the ball at the wall’s top.

Marlins shortstop Otto Lopez, who was on first base, began running, assuming Young would miss the ball. Yet, he was stunned as Young threw the ball back to first, completing a stunning inning-ending double play.

The catch showcased Young’s remarkable skill as a defensive center fielder. Since joining the league late in the 2023 season, Young has become recognized for his defensive prowess. In addition to his defense, this year marks his most productive offensively.

He has achieved a .244 batting average with 10 home runs and 43 RBIs. This is a significant step up from the five home runs he hit over his first three seasons.
